Warren Ford

Warren Ford, club president and honorary life member died Tuesday 29 September 2009, succumbing to a very aggressive cancer.

Tacoma Chinese New Year Wassas Dream

Warren first paddled with the Port Hacking Dragon Boat Club on 4 September 2004, one year later at the club's AGM he became club president.

Exactly three years later 6 September 2008 Port Hacking Dragon Boat Club celebrated a great 25th anniversary night of the first Dragon Boat Club in NSW. This celebration was Warrens idea and all credit is due to him for the success of this great event.

Many great things have happened whist Warren was President of this historic club, developing the clubs web site, implementing the PHDA group, seeing the club win Club of the Year 2007-08 from DBNSW in our 25th year and the purchase of our new dragon boat to name a few.

Warren's enthusiasm for life and dragon boating will be sorely missed.

Welcome Port Hacking Dragons Abreast!
After a meeting to form a Dragons Abreast Team on Port Hacking, the first paddling day (18 Nov 07) was very successful with 20 paddlers forming a team, the group returned the following week in view to making it a regular exercise routine.  This is not only a form of exercise for the women but is beneficial in preventing lymphoeodema in the affected arm. The most important thing about paddling is that it is a way forward in the life of women post breast cancer surgery and treatment; a way to increase self esteem and a realisation of a great journey forward after breast cancer.

1984 – 1988
The following is a copy of an article found in a 1988 Dragon Boat racing booklet titled

A BRIEF HISTORY FEATURE – PORT HACKING
The Port Hacking Dragon Boat Club began in September 1983 when John Hayes put together a crew of locals from 16 to 60 years of age.  John then trained them in an aluminium barge on Yowie Bay.
That original crew went on to win the inaugural Standard Chartered Dragon Boat race on Farm Cove Sydney in 1984.  From that they won a trip to compete in races in Singapore and Hong Kong in June 1984.  They were sponsored by Singapore Airlines, Sing Tao Newspapers, and Singapore and Hong Kong tourist associations.  On that trip they were successful in winning the Singapore International Plate race.
The following year the club sent over 80 crew members and supporters to Hong Kong with the generous assistance of Cathay Pacific Airways.
They were first runners up in the Cathay Pacific Petite final and the Hong Kong Urban Council Cup races.
Again in 1986 the club was represented in Hong Kong by the Port Hacking Girls crew.  They came home with the first runners up trophy of the Women’s International final.
In 1987 the Port Hacking Lillies over 35 women’s crew (made up in part of mothers of the 1986 girls crew) took part in the Hong Kong International Women’s final.  They were placed third by only 3/10th of a second behind Western Australia.  This is an indication of the depth of strength in the club and the tremendous interest that Dragon Boat racing has created in the Sutherland Shire and other parts of Australia.
From those early years the club has grown to the stage that they have 11 crews entering this years Bicentenial Races.  Three of those crews are from local schools.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors and the committee of Dragon Boats Australasia on their successes.  I would also like to thank the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board and David Hooker for their unison in bringing the sport of Dragon Boat racing to Australia.  May the success, fellowship and understanding that has been created continue.
